Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is set to participate in the green cement conversion project in South Australia.
KHNP signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and a statement of cooperation (SOC) for the production of green hydrogen for South Australia’s green cement manufacturing project with the South Australian State Government, the Hallett Group, and Elecseed at the South Australian State Energy and Mining Department on July 11 (local time).
The Hallett Group is a manufacturer of construction materials such as cement and is carrying out a green cement conversion project with funding of approximately AUD$20 million (US$13 million) from the Australian government. Typically, cement manufacturing emits a significant amount of carbon as waste or by using fossil fuels. In contrast, green cement drastically reduces carbon emissions by producing cement with hydrogen generated from solar power plants and electrolysis equipment. The surplus hydrogen is planned to be supplied to nearby hydrogen filling stations.
According to the agreement, these companies will actively cooperate in the production of green hydrogen within South Australia by building a cooperative relationship for the production and trading of hydrogen and related products, fostering a globally competitive hydrogen export industry, revitalizing the future hydrogen industry in South Australia, developing the domestic hydrogen market (demand) in Australia in the short term, and jointly conducting feasibility assessments for supplying green hydrogen for the South Australia Green Cement Conversion Project.
